COLLEGE STATION, TX - BYU won big in Texas in its 2020 season debut. The Cougars beat the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday night 73-8. Not even 24 hours later, BYU played on Burr field in Austin and scored 95 points against the University of Texas Longhorns. BYU’s dominant performance was nothing short of impressive. Senior full-back Connor Parry was grateful for the team’s strong start, “It was the perfect weekend to see where we are at and learn how we can improve as we head into the rest of our season.”
Senior James Mocke described the game as a “great opportunity to gel together as a team and shake the rust off the boots.” The team came out excited and played with high intensity for the first game. BYU scored as they moved the ball into space and utilized the backline.
BYU did not let up as they kicked-off against the Longhorns on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars were relentless in finding the try-zone. Throughout the match BYU was able to try new combinations with new players. Mocke was excited about the new talent on the team, “they got a good chance to put up their hands and show they want a spot on the roster.” Starting sophomore and prop McKay Johnson established a strong presence during the scrums and rucks. Following the match he highlighted the team success, “we controlled the ball in every phase and we didn’t let up until the final whistle.”
